Layouts
You start out with the default layout of where trays and vending machines are, however, if you so desire, you can change that. All you need is a Wrench which you can get from an Tool Vending Machine which can be found in the Engineering hallway. Holding the wrench, you just click on each plant tray, and then carry it into its desired position. Make sure to wrench it back down or it might fly away later. You do the same for vending machines and water tanks, etc.

<center></center>
<center>Example Layout.</center>

Plant Genetics
You can Examine a Seed to see its Yield and Potency.

To reset the plant's genetics, put its produce into a SeedMaker. To retain the genetics, instead use Plant Clippers. To get multiple of the desired seed, plant the seed and use the Plant Clippers twice to get more seeds.

Plant Traits
Each plant has its default traits that are standard across all shifts. These can be altered via plant cross-pollination and mutation. Traits can be reset per seed via the SeedMaker.

Potency starts at 5 out of the Seed Extractor / Vending Machine but can be increased to 50 via 15u of Robust Harvest. Max potency is 100 and can only currently be achieved via mutations (e.g. via Unstable Mutagen). Potency affects the size of the plant and amount of chemicals it provides in the Reagent Grinder. For example highly potent medical herbs break down into more medicine and can be eaten for higher effect and higher number of bites. A higher potency in wheat equates to higher amounts of flour produced.

Yield differs by plant and can only be modified by mutation (e.g. via Unstable Mutagen) or cross-pollination via swabs. Yield affects the number of plants that will be harvested when a planted seed has grown. By default, the highest yield plant is cocoa.

Nutrients is the number of nutrients that the plant can be ground up into via a Grinder. The more nutritious the plant, the more nutrients it will add to a Hydroponics Tray when Composted. Note that when a Hydroponics Tray runs out of nutrients, it will make the growing plant Unhealthy. Eggplant currently has the highest nutrient count with no detrimental chemicals. Nutrients may also affect food that is created using this plant.

Vitamins is the number of vitamins that the plant contains. It can be seen when the plant is ground up in a Grinder. Vitamins may affect food that is created using this plant.

Grinding Output is any extra products that the plant produces when ground using a Grinder. For example Wheat is ground up into Flour. Watermelons when ground up produce Water. Extra products can change when using cross-pollination.

Plant Mutations
Plants treated with Unstable Mutagen will undergo random genetic mutations. Since many genes are essential to a plant's survival, randomly mutating them has a high probability of killing the plant. However, mutation is the only way to get some genes. A plant can be examined to determine whether it has any mutation traits. The Hydroponics Tray may also visibly show some traits such as glowing or inability to harvest with your hands.

The more unstable mutagen applied, the more mutations but the higher likelihood the plant will die before harvest. Using small amounts via a Dropper is thus suggested. For example 1u of Mutagen can lead to plant mutation with a lower probability of killing the plant than 5u. Note that 5u is the smallest amount that non-Dropper containers can transfer.

+ Mutation Traits
Trait !! Description
Bioluminescence || Plants and products with this trait glow in the dark.
High Potency || Plants can exceed the unmutated maximum potency of 50 and grow to a potency of up to 100.
High Yield || Seeds produce more plants per harvest.
Less Water || Seeds require less water to grow
Ligneous || Plants require a sharp tool to harvest (e.g. a scythe or axe)
Long life || Grown plants live for more harvest cycles before growing Old and Wilting.
Low Light || Seeds require less light to grow
Pest Resistance || Seeds are more resistant to pests. Note that weeds aren't pests.
Screaming || Plants scream when being harvested, clipped, pulled out, chopped down.
Seedless || Plants do not produce viable seeds

Plant Cross-Pollination
Plants can also be cross-pollinated with one another for a chance to transfer traits and other desirable properties. To transfer pollen from one plant to another, use a sterile swab. Avoid pollen cross-contamination! Different species can be crossed to produce hybrids. Since cross-pollination is also probabilistic, it may take several tries for you to transfer the traits that you desire.

The way swabs work is:
* Swab Plant A - swab now has some traits of Plant A
* Swab Plant B - Plant B now has some traits of Plant A. swab now has some traits of Plant B
* Swab Plant C - Plant C now has some traits of Plant B. swab now has some traits of Plant C

To reset the swab, get a new swab. Swabs can be labelled via a Hand labeller. Swabs don't transfer all traits to plants.

A common example of cross-pollination is to maximum nutrient growth. The reason for this is that using Mutagen rapidly drains Nutrients in a Hydroponics Tray and if a Chemist isn't on-hand to help you, you will need to grow your own nutrients to ensure your plants survive.
* Grow a cocoa plant and eggplant plant (not eggs, the purple one!)
* Get a clean swab
* Interact with the swab onto the cocoa plant
* Interact with the same swab on the eggplant plant
* Use Plant Clippers on the eggplant plant
* Examine the Eggplant seed and check if the Yield is 6. If not, rip out the eggplant and plant a new eggplant seed and redo the prior steps.
* Plant the 6 yield Eggplant seed
* Apply 15u of Robust to the seed
* Wait for the plant to grow a bit.
* Use Plant Clippers to clip the plant 2+ times to clone the seed
* Store one of the seeds in your backpack so that if the plant dies or yields no seeds (due to interference) that you have a backup.
* Grow lots of eggplants!
* Compost the eggplants by holding the eggplant and interacting on a Hydroponic Tray

Other examples of cross-pollination are:
* Swab Poppy and then a Food plant like Apple. The apple will now contain bicaridine to heal Brute damage
* Swab Wheat and then a non-replant plant like Tower Cap or Apple. The plant will now not need to be replanted but will produce flour.

Crates
A Botanist can request crates from a Logistics Officer that contain seeds. Most seeds will be available either in Hydroponics lockers or the SeedMaker. Some exotic seeds will need to either be purchases from Logistics or mutated.
*Seed Crate - An assortment of seeds available from a SeedMaker. e.g. carrot, chilli, corn, eggplant, lemon, oat, onion, potato, sugarcane, tomato, wheat
*Exotic Seed Crate - An assortment of rare seeds. e.g. banana, cannabis, egg-plant, fly amanita, nettle, pineapple, tobacco, tower cap

* Get a clean swab
* Grow lots of eggplants!

Botanists are responsible for growing food, medicines and resources aboard the station. Without you, the Chef may resort to "questionable" methods of food acquisition. Be sure to make use of your seed extractor and plant clippers to maintain a steady supply of seeds.

Your role is primarily to assist the Chef; when starting, ask the Chef what ingredients they would like you to grow. You may assist the medical bay, though they will generally not be aware you exist; your Lingzhi plants are much easier at producing epinephrine than a ChemDispenser, but not as easy as if the Doctors get a hold of an Emag from Security. If Medical and Logistics go down, and there are no more ChemDispensers, you are the station's only hope for medicine production. Your Hydroponics Trays are also the easiest way to produce wood for Crafting needs.

Beware suspicious colleagues asking for wood as it can be used for nefarious purposes (such as crafting weapons. Beware suspicious colleagues asking for Ambrosia vulgaris, Galaxy Thistle or Nettles, as these can be used as poisons. Be sure to give a clown an extra long stare when they ask for bananas (whilst not directly dangerous, they can be quite joyous to a mischievous clown or traitor). Protect your Water Tank from thieves.

In the middle of a Botanists shift, if you happen to be standing in a pool of unused ingredients for your Chef and feel a bit bored, there are other things you can do. You can make a pest of yourself by shoving a pool of medical plants at Chemists and tapping your shoe pointing angrily at them until they take them. You can batch produce bananas, eat them and scatter them across the station with glee. You can attempt to mutate your plants into highly nutritious versions or killer monsters (for defensive purposes, of course, but beware a possible demotion or ban). Or maybe you can pester the Chef to allow you to experiment in their kitchen. If you have access to a grinder and a drinking glass / beaker, you can make your own medicines and/or poisons. Consider selling unused plants to Logistics. If crew are suddenly craving bananas and beating their chests, it's time to supply the Bartender with banana juice so that they can make a cure.

An expert botanist is a force to be reckoned with and oft underestimated / ignored. With the right tools and knowledge, you can easily trip unsuspecting antags / targets (banana peels or spill a bucket), punish them (with your shovel or poison) and potentially unleash critters on them (plant mutations). Meanwhile, you can stock up on healing meds, food and drink for self-preservation. All the while, under the radar of Security who typically will have bigger fish to fry.

Remember to use the Radio to work closely with the crew.

Tools
You will have a number of tools at your disposal to help keep your crops healthy and growing. Don't forget to top up the hydroponics trays with water and/or nutrients every now and then, and make sure to pull any weeds as they pop up. Chemicals are available either from vendors or made via chemistry. Careless use of chemicals can have unintended side effects and should be used appropriately (or not). Radioactive chemicals may have an unexpected mutagenic effect on your plants if used. <br />
Plants
Refer to Hydroponics

Hydroponics Tray
These interstellar-grade hydroponics systems are where a botanist typically spends most of their time. Examining a tray by shift + Left Click will reveal details about its current status, including its water and nutrient levels, the presence of weeds and the status of any plants currently in the tray.

Seeds can be planted in a cleared hydroponics tray by clicking with a packet of seeds equipped. Once planted, the seeds will quickly sprout and begin to grow. Whilst growing you can water it, use Robust Harvest to increase potency or fertilizer to increase the tray's Nutrients. When the plant is ready to harvest the hydroponics tray will show a green indicator . Most plants can be harvested by hand; some, however, will require the use of tools. Some plants, such as apple trees, can survive multiple harvests. Others, such as wheat, will need be replanted each time.

You can Examine a Hydroponics Tray to see its Water and Nutrients. Adding water will increase the Water count over time. Adding Fertilizer will increase the Nutrient count over time. Over time, the water and nutrient count will fall if there is a plant in the tray.

Tray Maintenance
The lifecycle of a Hydroponics tray is the following:
*Empty (no water, seed or nutrients).
*Hydrated - you've added water to it (e.g. from a bottle or bucket).
*Ready for planting - you've added water and nutrients to it (i.e. fertilizer).
*Planted - you've added a seed to it
*Ready for Harvest - you've waited for the plant to grow
*Sampled - you've taken a sample (seed)
*Harvested - you've picked ready plants. Some plants will then grow again. Others will die and need replanting.
*Unhealthy - You've sampled too many seeds or sprayed it with deadly chemicals. The plant isn't coping too well. It'll continue to grow. Health can be restored by fertilizers or you can cut your losses and extract a seed (plant clippers) and replant.
*Old / Wilted - the plant has matured and will soon die. It will still be harvestable and you can extract seeds but only for a short duration. Extract the seed and then pluck it out / chop it down.
* Dead - the plant has been harvested and ceased growing. It should be plucked out / chopped down. No seeds can be extracted.

Random Events:
*Weeds Present - Over time, hydroponics trays can become filled with weeds. These can be removed either by using a mini hoe, or through chemical means. Be warned, however, that overuse of weed killers can lead to unhealthy plants, possibly killing them. Trays filled with weeds will have a flashing red indicator .

*Kudzu - use of Unstable Mutagen could lead plants to grow into Kudzu, a very dangerous plant that grows rapidly and could suffocate those caught in it. Use unstable mutagen with caution.

Working with the medical department
As indicated, a few of your plants are of use to the station medical department, and a few chemical products are of use to you.

* Lingzhi will easily be the most useful to the chemlab: it is a precursor to epinepherine. Making this from scratch is a particularly complex process with multiple steps that actually requires them to leave their lab (!!) and hunt down ingredients like welding fuel.
* Nettles can provide them with histamine (for ultravasculine, a potent antitoxin, and diphenhydramine, an anti-histamine).
* Galaxy thistle supplies stellibinin (an antitoxin); combined with aloe it makes siderlac (an anti-caustic). These are niche medicines.
*Poppies can be ground into Bicardine, a common anti-brute drug.
*Aloe can be ground into a paste to help with burn damage.

If you want make friends with the chemists, the most useful of these by far is lingzhi. You might also bring a container, if you have it. Speaking chemistry language and supplying formulas can also help, but don't try to boss them around at their job and remember that they might be very busy.

These formulas are easy for chemistry to make in a large beaker:
* 100u Ammonia fertilizer (NHHH at 25u per click)
* 90u EZ nutrient (KPN, 30u each)
* 90u Left-4-zed (KPN, 3xRa at 15u per click). This is a slightly suspicious request, but within your department's remit.

These formulas are a little harder:
* 80u Diethylamine fertilizer (NHHH at 10u each, plus 40u ethanol).
* 180u Robust Harvest: H S O O at 25u a click (100u sulfuric acid), then K P N at 30u a click (90u of EZ Nutrient). Move both to the ChemMaster, transfer them back to beakers in equal proportions, discard excess 10u of sulfuric acid.

A chemist will never, ever, ever have the toxin in stock to make more Plant-B-gone.
}}

<br />

== Working with the medical department ==

* 90u EZ nutrient (KPN, 30u each)
* 90u Left-4-zed (KPN, 3xRa at 15u per click).

A chemist will never, ever, ever have the toxin in stock to make more Plant-B-gone.
guides=Hydroponics
}}

<br />

<br />
Plants

Image !! Position !! Description
|| Red Light, Left || Dead plant that needs re-planting. Use a spade to remove the plant.

* 90u EZ nutrient (KPN, 30u each)
* 90u Left-4-zed (KPN, 3xRa at 15u per click).

Psionics, or psychics, are entities that have unlocked psionic abilities through various means. These individuals are considered to be a potential hazard to the station. The Epistemics department consisting of; the Mystagogue, Chaplain, Scientists and Psionic Mantis are supposed to keep the psionics in check and if that fails they have a handful of tools for neutralizing harmful psionics.

All psionic entities have a shared telepathic communication channel, accessible by writing an equal sign before your text message. It's anonymized so you'll never know who you are talking to. It could entirely not even be a crew member.

Psionic Abilities
Psionic Abilities are mental abilities that interface with the noösphere. Humanoids have limited access to the noösphere's full potential, allowing some to find ways to command it. This means that humanoids can only have a single ability at a time. They offer various benefits to the user in exchange of generating glimmer every time they are used. They generate from 8Ψ to 12Ψ every time they are used.

When you get lucky enough to unlock a psionic power, excluding starting with one, a popup with appear which allows you to decide to accept it or not. You won't know what you got until you accept it. Be careful to read the text before accepting, you technically give your consent to be targeted by certain forces. Accepting the psionic power also raises the glimmer by 1Ψ to 5Ψ.
<br clear=all>

After unlocking a psionic ability, it will be automatically placed in your action bar. All you have to do to use it is to click on it or press the corresponding action key. Some of them require you to click on a target.

Fair warning that you can only have one psionic ability at a time, excluding special circumstances.

List of Psionic Powers
Here is a list of the currently available psionic powers. The Weight column shows their likeliness to be acquired using normal means explained in the next part. If the weight is 0, it means they aren't accessible by normal means.

Acquiring Powers
Psionics can be acquired in a number of ways.
There are a few ways to acquire psionic powers. Some roles can start with them and you can get lucky during glimmer events or by drinking oracle juice. Certain roles have better chances of unlocking psionic powers than others.

At Shift Start
As soon as you start existing in a shift, late join included, you have a basic 7% chance of rolling a psionic power. All Heads of Staff except for the Logistics Officer instead have a 32% chance, while the Chaplain has a 21% chance. This is further increased for late joining players depending on the station's Glimmer.

Additionally, each person is given one complimentary "Reroll" for Psionics, which they can use by consuming certain hallucinogenic drugs. See below for more details.

The two roles that always start with psionic powers are the Mystagogue starting with Dispel and the Psionic Mantis starting with Metapsionic Pulse.

During the Shift
During the shift, a decent amount of ways to unlock psionic abilities offer themselves to you:
* Noospheric Storm offers the potential of awakening a psionic power, of 3 people maximum, every time they happen.
* Noospheric Zaps don't directly give you psionics, but if you have previously attempted to roll for psionics using drugs, the seizure will unlock the ability to roll again.
* Glimmer on its own doesn't give you psionics, instead it increases your chances of rolling for psionics by an amount equal to the current glimmer divided by 1000. For example, if the glimmer was at 300 when you take space drugs, your chances of becoming psychic are increased by 30%.
* Artefact Pulse that can happen from some artifacts.
* Lotophagoi Oil sometimes dispensed by The Oracle. It has a chance of giving you psionics equal to your original base chance, plus a bonus chance based on the current glimmer. You need to ingest at least 20 units.
* Space Drugs is the weaker alternative to Lotophagoi Oil. It has a chance to give you psionics equal to your original base chance, plus a bonus chance based on the current glimmer. You need to ingest at least 15 units.
*:Note for the Lotophagoi Oil and Space Drugs, consuming either will use up your reroll attempt. Should it fail to give you psionics, consuming further drugs will not cause an additional roll until you have regained your reroll from a seizure.

Changing your Powers
Since the power you receive from the psychic roll is random, you may receive a power that isn't necessarily useful. While Dispel is nice to have for Epistemics personnel, a security officer would probably prefer a different power for example. If you find that you have an undesirable power, you can request to have your power stripped by the Psionic Mantis. Afterwards, you can try again for another power by any of the usual means.

Special Items
It is also possible to unlock certain psionic abilities without being a psionic yourself or to add another ability on top of your current one if you are.

Psionic Insulation
Insulative clothing and cryptobiolin will render you immune to psionics, but prevent you from using any you have. This means that you will be able to see floating telegnosis projections and through psionic invisibility.

It is particularly useful if you want to avoid getting mind swapped, zapped by the discharges or just don't want to gain any psionic abilities.

The easiest psionic insulation to acquire. It can be found in the ClothesMate, EpiDrobe or even crafted using one steel and your muscles. Its only downside is that it has a high chance of combusting into ashes if the glimmer discharge is too strong.

Insulative Skullcap
The better psionic insulation. It doesn't get destroyed by strong discharges but might set you on fire. This one is mostly found in Security.

Insulative Headcage
Also found in Security, except it's for the prisoners.

Cryptobiolin Pill
Not normally found on the station, but in the hands of Nuclear Operatives. It last for a long time but renders the user psionically insulated. Woe is the operative that forgets to eat their pill.

Psionic Removal
There's many reasons and ways, for someone to get rid of their psionic abilities, whenever they want to or not. Removing one's psionic abilities removes their ability to speak on the telepath channel but also stops them from being automatically targeted by anti-psychic forces.

The main reason that many people might want, or be forced to get rid of their abilities, is to reduce the amount of crew members using their psionic abilities to generate glimmer or to stop nefarious individuals using certain powers to sneak into Armory.

Ways to Remove Psionic Powers
<big>Mindbreaker Toxin</big><br><br>
Metabolizing 20 units or more of Mindbreaker Toxin will remove psionics from a person. This is mostly used by the Psionic Mantis and Mystagogue during White Alert to prevent people from generating any more glimmer. It can also be used during criminal sentencing.

<big>Soulbreaker Shells</big><br><br>
Soulbreaker shells will remove psionics from psychics they hit. They require research and to be printed at a security techfab.

<big>Golemnization</big><br><br>
While the act of being sacrificed itself doesn't technically remove your psionic abilities, being placed into a golem forces the powers out of you. As a golem you still get to keep your ability to talk on the telepath channel.

<big>Death</big><br><br>
To no surprise, if you die and get a new body from the cloner or metempsychotic machine, you will lose your psionic abilities. But fear not, you can always try your luck again to regain a new ability.
