Emotes are an additional communication method available to players for conveying non-spoken actions. Emotes are particularly useful for communicating in situations where verbal communication is not possible: Mute characters, mimes, characters separated by a hard vacuum with no radio, etc.

Emotes are subject to all rules on communication, but especially rule B1.2, subsection 1: "Do not use the Emote channel to bypass an inability to speak. Use the Emote channel for things that could reasonably be displayed by your character's physical motions."

General Use

Emotes may be accessed by starting your chat message with ' /me ', ' @ ', or ' * '. This will cause the resulting message to follow the character's name directly, be displayed in italics, and without quotation marks. For example: "/me yawns" will be rendered as "Urist McPlayer yawns."

Special Emotes

Some emotes will result in pre-programmed behavior when sent, or may even be sent automatically if your player is affected by certain conditions, such as zombification. Other emotes will result in visible changes to your player sprite.

The Emote Wheel & Sprite Emotes

The emote wheel can be accessed by pressing its hotkey (default Y) or the button in the top menu bar. For most species, the emote wheel provides access to three types of emotes: general emotes, hand-based emotes, and vocal based emotes. Selecting a category brings up a selection of available emotes in that category.

The 'general' category includes two emotes which produce an effect on the player's sprite: spin, and jump. Spin causes the player's emote to spin rapidly, and jump causes the player's sprite to rapidly hop vertically.

Sound-playing emotes

Some emotes will trigger sounds when sent. The table below lists the sounds available to each playable species. Sound-playing emotes and their requirements, which may be the ability to produce vocal noise, or the presence of certain limbs. If a species has a sound listed but the requirements for producing the sound are unclear, they are marked with ' ? '.

[This table needs significant verification and testing. Some emotes are programmatically available but I don't know how they're triggered (e.g. Weh on humans). Assume writer ignorance where your knowledge conflicts with the table, and please update it.]
